The following are the things to avoid:

1. Joining too many affiliate programs. - There are millions of affiliate programs available today over the internet. Exciting opportunities as they may seem, they can be overwhelming, to the extent that you cannot decide which one to take. Then, you end up choosing everything and overloading yourself. Avoid this scenario, otherwise, you will end up achieving very little or nothing at all.

2. Having only one affiliate program. - Contradictory to having an affiliate overload, getting only one program or product might not be enough for you to earn a sensible passive income. Try a couple or three affiliate programs into your business, but remember that they should be connected or relevant to your market niche.

3. Having poor knowledge about the product. - Have you tried promoting a movie to your friends that you have not watched before? Difficult huh! This is also true in your affiliate program. If experiencing your merchant’s product will enable you to be very good in affiliate advertising, then, buy it.

4. Marketing a broad niche. - Do not even think of competing with the big guys because they spend thousands of dollars to promote their broad niche. If you are just an average webmaster with very limited financial resources, you will not have a chance to win. Besides, if you only have a small business online, you will not be able to supply a massive audience.

5. Marketing a tight niche. - Opposed to competing with the pros, you cannot benefit much with a stiff niche. If limited number of people are looking for your product, you will only earn little affiliate commission. Choose a niche with substantial demand and low supply.

6. Marketing the wrong program. - A wrong affiliate program generally means having goods or services that do not match your market niche. Be certain that when people are driven to your website, you should provide them with what they are looking for. Otherwise, you will not be making any sales.

7. Marketing a scammy program. - Be wise in choosing an affiliate merchant. The last thing you need is promoting something from an illegitimate source. What is even worse is not being aware that you are promoting a scammy product! Even if you are looking for products from a trusted affiliate network, you may still stumble upon online frauds.

8. Procrastinating. - People who get excited in doing any business, and stopping after several months for not being productive, belong to the 85 percent who fail. Be patient! You will never know when you are just about to win in your online business venture. Remember, when you stop, you miss THE CHANCE.

9. Spending too much on advertisements. - From time to time you can spend a little on internet ads. But spending too much, especially at a very early stage, is a wrong business strategy. Wait until you get a momentum and start having steady passive income streams, then use a part of that earning for paid advertisements. This can skyrocket your online income.

10. Over advertising. - Have you seen money making websites with very poor content and containing too much advertisements, banners and pop-ups? Do not follow this kind of affiliate advertising. This is because your visitors will not even take a minute to read your content. They will just look for a better and professional site.

11. Commission theft. - You need to look at this one closely. An affiliate link might look like this:

When the affiliate merchant receives an opt-in from this link, the "your-name.html" part tells the merchant that the commission is payable to you. Now, an inconsiderate visitor could easily determine the affiliate merchant from the "www,affiliate-merchant" part and would go directly to:

www,affiliate-merchant,com

This will make you lose your affiliate commission because the "your-name.html" is not indicated. The way to avoid this is to get your own domain and apply cloaking to your affiliate link.

Your domain might look like this:

www,your-company,com

Create a sub-domain, e.g., your-offer, and set it to "re-direct" to your affiliate link "www,affiliate-merchant,com/your-name.html". Your new affiliate link will look like this:

www,your-offer,your-company,com

This way, the visitor cannot see your original affiliate link.

12. Not creating trust. - You should create trust before offering goods or services to your visitors. You should create a strong bond between yourself and your customers. This creates a long term business relationship and more passive income opportunities.

13. Reinventing the wheel. - Creating new ways to profit online are usually for very experienced entrepreneurs. Do not try to formulate your own devices unless you can afford to do so. Follow the proven steps for now, and when you are already earning big, you can formulate new ways, create new software, cook up new systems, etc.

A bonus! Consider this the 14th mistake in affiliate advertising that you should avoid:

Wasting time. - When you are not organizing time, you are wasting it. Make the most of your time and set goals. Your business should be with you online or offline. For example. When you send an email to anybody, include your signature file. When you are in a party, talk about it with friends. When you are traveling, write good notes about it.

Keep the fire burning! You do not have to be a slave to your affiliate advertising business. You just need to manage your time.
